The Tattoo Chronicles – Kat Von D
The Tattoo Chronicles (HarperCollins, 2010)
This is the second published book by Miss Katherine von Drachenberg, also known as Kat Von D. “The Tattoo Chronicles” is a personal and beautiful journal consisting of photographs, paintings, hand written letters by Kat, confessions, and extraordinary stories from people she has tattooed over a period of approximately one year. It is a year of tattoos. But it is also a tale about love, about the pain of letting go and moving on, and about appreciating the little things in life.
While reading this book, I could not help but realizing that Kat von D and I have something in common, and she put words on something that is hard to describe. In the introduction of the book, she says:
The journaling really helped me not only sort out my thoughts on my own (which is how I prefer to work anyway), but also, like a weird cleansing ritual, relieve me from whatever energies would pass through my office door.”
That is precisely what I feel and would say about my songwriting.
While describing her tattoo for Charity Jones, she reflects upon beauty;
“As a woman, I can understand how we can feed off of the physical idealism that surrounds us on billboards and in magazines, television, and movies, making it all too easy to focus on all our imperfections every time we look into our own mirror.”
And she continues:
“We’re bombarded by these false idealizations everywhere we go. Of course, Charity’s learned concept of perfect was unattainable.”
This book is both dark and inspiring. It is about being true to yourself, your craft and the people around you – and I love it. Kat Von D shows that she is not only a tattoo artist, but also a true artist at heart.
“For the heart is an organ of fire”…
